Day One: Developing The Entrepreneurial Spirit April 4, 2005

Lecture: Introduction to Cross-Cultural Entrepreneurship

Speaker:
Richard Dasher (Director, US-Asia Technology Management Center)

In this introductory lecture, Professor Richard Dasher, the ASES Stanford faculty advisor, will discuss the importance of entrepreneurship in a global context. What makes cross-border and cross-cultural entrepreneurship unique and challenging? Professor Dasher will share his insight on what it means to be an entrepreneur in an international context.

Iris Yen (Director, Operating Strategy, Gap Inc.)

What does it mean to be a young entrepreneur? Hear from panelists with recent entrepreneurial experience, people who still remember the trials and concerns that come with starting up a venture for the very first time. They will discuss some of the issues that young entrepreneurs face, such as making the first leap to entrepreneurship and balancing a "normal" job and life with the entrepreneurial venture. We will also hear from panelists who will discuss what embarking on an entrepreneurial career entails.

Edison Tse (Associate Professor of Management Science and Engineering, Stanford University)

Universities can be great research institutions and sources of innovative new ideas. How do universities help harness and develop the creative energy of students so that they can successfully engage in entrepreneurial ventures? The panelists will discuss the role of universities in encouraging and promoting entrepreneurship among college students.

This session will cover the role of a Silicon Valley lawyer in working with startups engaged in a global business and in connecting them to investors and other resources. The seminar will also cover current financing requirements and alternatives for startups, as well as the role of a lawyer in working with startups and financing for startups.

Keynote Lecture: Creating Successful Cross-Border Ventures

Min Zhu (Co-founder, President, and CTO, WebEx)

Ranked by Forbes as one of the fastest-growing public IT companies in the world, WebEx is a successful cross border high tech venture between Silicon Valley and China. The journey to create this venture is full of challenges and rewards. As Min moves on to join NEA, the largest early stage VC in the Valley, as a venture partner, to promote cross border investments, he will share exciting opportunities in an interactive dialogue.

Lecture: Tech Entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley

Speaker:
Tom Lee (Professor, Electrical Engineering, Stanford University; Co-Founder & Director of Advanced Development, Matrix Semiconductor, Inc.)

Professor Lee will talk about the history of high tech entrepreneurship in the Silicon Valley area and its relationship to Stanford University, as well as discuss his own experiences with semiconductor startups.

Lecture: The Art, Science, and Myth of Videoconferencing

Speaker:
Milton Chen (President and CTO, VSee Lab)

Human-Computer interaction technology represents an exciting field with great potential and many possible applications. Milton Chen will discuss videoconferencing technology specifically, and how that technology is being utilized by organizations such as the United Nations and the United States Department of Defense.

Cameron Ring (Founder and Chief Architect, Plaxo)

Cameron Ring and Todd Masonis of Plaxo will talk about their decision to get involved in start ups and what sparked the founding of netElements and Plaxo, the difficulties initially faced and lessons learnt, whether studying at Stanford prepared them for entrepreneurship, advice they would give to budding entrepreneurs and the importance of teamwork in an entrepreneurial venture.

Keynote Lecture: The Workings of a Video Game Company

Trip Hawkins (Chairman and CEO, Digital Chocolate)

Mr. Hawkins will lecture on his experiences in founding video game companies such as Electronic Arts (and more recently Digital Chocolate), and provide insight into new directions and opportunities in the gaming development industry.

Cultural differences can influence business negotiations in significant and unexpected ways, as many a hapless deal maker has learned. Grande Lum will address some of those issues surrounding cross-border negotiation in this talk.

Our speakers will address issues relating to entrepreneurial marketing.

The United Nations launches the International Year 2005 of Microfinance in an effort to build support for making financial services more accessible to poor and low-income people. Microfinance is a smart strategy because it builds on the one asset found even in the poorest communities: the power and determination of the human spirit. Our panelists will discuss the importance of microfinance as it relates to entrepreneurship.
